RUGBY SEVENS SERIES: KATIE MASON TO CAPTAIN ENGLAND IN FINAL EVENT

The final round of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series will holdin France and Katie Mason will be captaining an inexperienced England squad to the event.


From the Rugby Europe Women’s Grand Prix Series held in Malemort, coach of the squad, Coach James Bailey has included six players into the squad, a list that also features Mason.

Takingpart in Clermont-Ferrand on Saturday and Sunday are the likes of Lotte Clapp,Deborah Fleming,Holly Aitchison, Kelly Smith, and three-time try scorer Olivia Jones. These players were also part of the team last weekend
The past two seasons has seen Lottie Holland, Jess Breach and Sophie Tandy feature alongside Jones for England at the U20 level.

England has been joined with the likes of Canada, Russia and Brazil in Pool B due to their eight place finish last time in Langford. They would be kicking off the competition on Saturday against Russia, winners of the Rugby Europe Women’s Grand Prix Series.

Bailey who spoke on the upcoming game noted that one of the aim of the team was to build the strength and depth of their programme while giving players the chance to have an international sevens experience.

“Our goal for this weekend is to give international sevens experience to more players as part of our on-going aim to build the strength and depth of our programme.

“It’s exciting to see how the squad continues to develop and with so many players having made their debuts on the World Series this year, we want to continue to give them opportunities to progress, learn and build experience.” he added.

Bailey also stated that the team was pleased with their performance at Malemort and despite the challenges brewing up this weekend, it would offer a valuable learning experience for the team.
