South Africa To Lock Horns With World XV

Nick Mallet, the former coach of the South Africa rugby team will now take charge in grooming up his team before the much discussed match against the world XV. South Africa will play 15 matches this year. BJ Botha, one of the important players of the South Africa squad will also be a part of the Springboks squad.

South Africa rugby union which is also known as Springboks has been playing in the international circuit since 1891. In the 1987 and 1991 the Springboks did not play in the world cup due to sporting boycotts of South Africa. Paul Roos was the first captain of the Springboks team when the team toured to Britain 1906. In the 1955 world cup, then South African president Nelson Mandela, wearing the jersey of the Springboks presented the trophy to then captain of the team Pienaar. In the year of 2010, the Boks became the first team to play against the Ireland in the home turf. The match still bears historical significance. On the other hand the Springboks earned enough notoriety when 21 high profile players of the national team backed out before the 2011 rugby world cup. Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg is the home ground of the Springboks. The Ellis Park stadium also became the main venue of the world cup in 1995. According to the IRB world rankings, South Africa stands in the second position. Since 1990, the Springboks have become one of the most successful teams of the sphere of world rugby.
